About Oakland University![]() Oakland University (OU) is located in Rochester, MI, near the world headquarters and engineering centers of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Ford Motor Company, General Motors as well as over one hundred automotive suppliers in southeast Michigan.OU�s School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS) consists of four departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Systems Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and a new department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. These departments offer undergraduate and graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering, computer engineering, and computer science. The university in general and the School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS) in particular have a record of fostering and valuing K-12 STEM outreach program. ![]() Both the School of Engineering and Computer Science(SECS) and the School of Education and Human Services(SEHS) at OU have made strong outreach inroads into the local K-12 programs and make strong efforts to increase the exposure of K-12 students to STEM fields. As part of the SECS outreach program, the SECS currently runs K-12 teacher training workshops to train K-12 teacher in best practices in delivering a STEM curriculum aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. All participating teachers receive certificates of completion and are granted continuing education credits. Over the last 3 years, SECS has developed relationships with more than 200 local STEM teachers providing a large trove of possible candidates that are both competent and interested to pursue an RET opportunity. The SEHS at OU provides extensive outreach experiences to area school districts and community agencies. Some of the outreach activities involve pre-service science teacher education and working with local school educational partners with mathematics and science partnership grants. The education department has partnered with the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the Detroit Zoological Society, and other organizations involved with science education in training pre-service science teachers. |
